FRANKLINTON, La. -- Lakeisha Adams has been found guilty of second-degree murder by a Washington Parish jury. She was accused of putting her infant son in a dryer and turning it on.
She had pled not-guilty by reason of insanity, but faces a mandatory life sentence in prison for second-degree murder.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 25.
“Always when you're dealing with a crime of this nature, the sensitivity of it, it is pretty difficult to actually get out and represent someone with these type facts,” said Barry Bolton, Adams’ attorney before the verdict. “However, we feel that we have a good defense and we're going to present that.”
In December 2005, Bogalusa Police said the then 18-year old mother of two, put her infant son in the dryer and turned it on, killing the child.
Several potential jurors told attorneys the facts of the case made them uncomfortable. The coroner said the baby suffered third-degree burns on more than 50 percent of his body and blunt-force head trauma. Jurors were expected to see pictures of the baby's injuries in court.
At the time her best friend, Nicole Walker, expressed disbelief. “I can't believe she's done that,” she said. “I mean, we were always so cool and we're friends, I can't believe she's done that.”
