Cheshire home invasion Survivor Appears on Oprah

CBS News- A Connecticut doctor whose wife and two daughters were killed in a gruesome 2007 home invasion said on Thursday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that while he has had suicidal thoughts he chose not to kill himself because he hopes to be with his family in the afterlife.

In court earlier this month, before a man convicted in the killings was sentenced to death, Dr. William Petit said he had struggled with suicidal thoughts, nightmares and flashbacks. Winfrey asked Petit why he decided not to kill himself after all.

"Religious reasons," Petit answered. "I thought in the afterlife, if I was going to meet up with my family, if I did that (commit suicide) then maybe I would never meet up with them again. I wasn't willing to take that chance. I thought that they would not approve and they would want me to go forward."

Petit was the sole survivor of the home invasion. His wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela, were killed. The mother and youngest daughter were sexually assaulted. Authorities say their attackers tied the girls to their beds, poured gasoline on or around them and set the house on fire.

Steven Hayes of Connecticut was convicted of sexually assaulting and strangling Jennifer Hawke-Petit and killing her daughters. He was sentenced to death. Another defendant, Joshua Komisarjevsky, is to go to trial next year.

Petit told Winfrey he thinks his wife would want him to continue his medical career. He also told Winfrey that he is not considering forgiveness right now.

"I don't think you can forgive ultimate evil," he said. "I think forgiving the essence of evil is not appropriate."

New Probe Yields Image of Madeleine McCann Suspect

Could a sketch of a man seen near the apartment where Madeleine McCann vanished two years ago provide new clues in the hunt to find the child?

At least, that is the hope of her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, who are participating in a new film alongside a team of detectives they hired to help re-investigate the case.

So far, those investigators have discovered that some potential witnesses spotted a man, with pockmarked features, watching the holiday apartment in the resort of Praia de Luz, Portugal. It was from there that Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday.

The detectives have been combing through files from the case closed by local police last summer. A new film, Cutting Edge: Madeleine Was Here (to be shown Thursday on the U.K.'s Channel 4 at 9 p.m.), follows the probe.

Her parents recognize that Madeleine could have changed. A new image has been released of what she now might look like. But other changes are likely, too. "She could be speaking a different language, she might have her hair different, she might have different interests, but you know she's still our daughter," he mother says in the film.

Retired police detective Dave Edgar, who leads the family's search team, believes an answer lies with the local people in Portugal.

The McCanns have been stepping up their fight to keep Madeleine in the news and fuel a continuing hunt for her around this second anniversary. In a show that recently aired in the U.S., the parents told Oprah Winfrey, "We're really united in our goal and our love of Madeleine and [her younger siblings, twins] Sean and Amelie."

Cindy Anthony: "I cancelled Oprah"

Earlier this week, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" announced their decision to cancel George and Cindy Anthony's sit down interview.

Based on the Anthonys' decision to appear on other programs, we have decided not to move forward with their interview on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' at this time," a statement released on April 14th said.

Cindy Anthony sent a text message to reporter Jessica D'Onofrio at Local 6 News last night. The message said:

BTW I CANCELLED ON OPRAH because of integrity.

A Oprah Winfrey Show representative said "the show has no further comment on the issue."

Winfrey Backs Out

Winfrey has backed out of interviewing George and Cindy Anthony.

The couple was scheduled to appear on Oprah in May. Eyewitness News reported the show caught wind of the Anthony TV tour to appear on other programs and cancelled.

The parents of Casey Anthony will appear on CBS's The Early Show Wednesday and Thursday morning.
