Now Public.com - On Tuesday, April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine high school, and marked one of the bloodiest school shooting incidents in the US.
The Columbine school massacre took the lives twelve students and one teacher. The massacre ended after the two shooters committed suicide. Sadly, the lesson of Columbine was not enough to stop another deadly school shooting, and legislators still struggle to close the loophole that made the massacre possible.
The motive of the shooters were the center of public's attention. The FBI's Columbine investigators and psychiatrists argued that Eric Harris was a clinical psychopath, and Dylan Klebold was depressive. Others have different interpretations. Jerald Block, a US psychiatrist, believe that violent video games led up to the shooting.
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold obtained their weapons from gun show hobbyist dealers through a friend. Eleven years later, the situation is still much the same. While the public polls show a majority favoring the closing of gun show loophole, legislators still have not pass laws to require buyers at gun shows to undergo rigorous background checks.
Tom Mauser, whose son was murdered at Columbine school shooting, challenged the gun extremists and the cultural that has come to accept excessive gun exposure in public spaces. As a board member and spokesperson for Colorado Ceasefire, he spent part of his weekend picketing outside of a Starbucks store to protest gun enthusiasts gatherings in Starbucks.
