Sad Anniversary Approaching..

Nearly 3 years have passed since our family member - Lisa Ruttenberg Stebic - was last seen on April 30, 2007, at her home in Plainfield, Illinois.

Despite the naming of her estranged husband - Craig Stebic - as a "person of interest" in the case of her disappearance - and, the fact that the FBI & Plainfield Police Department believe she was a victim of foul play - no arrest has been made.

DNA Shows Headless Skeleton Was Male

(AP) DNA test results released Wednesday show a headless, armless skeleton found along the Des Plaines River last week was from an unidentified male, ending speculation the badly decomposed body was one of two women whose disappearances have drawn national media attention.

Results of an autopsy performed last week on the remains were inconclusive. The person had been dead several months or more, but the rib cage, spinal column and partial left and right femur bones were not enough to determine an identity, race or gender of the corpse, authorities said.

Shreds of blue jeans and a small amount of U.S. currency were also found along with the remains near the town of Channahon.

An investigation into the corpse's identity was ongoing, Illinois State Police said Wednesday in a statement.

The location of the remains in Will County prompted speculation they were related to the high-profile missing person cases of Stacy Peterson or Lisa Stebic.

Stacy Peterson's husband Drew has pleaded not guilty to killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio. He contends Stacy, his fourth wife, left him for another man when she disappeared in October 2007 and is most likely living outside Illinois.

"We can take no joy or relief in the fact that it isn't (Stacy Peterson) because some family somewhere will be grieving," Drew Peterson's attorney, Reem Odeh. "But we hope this invigorates a global search for Stacy and brings attention to the fact that she is still missing."

Savio's death was originally ruled an accidental drowning. It was reclassified as a homicide after her body was exhumed and an autopsy conducted following Stacy Peterson's disappearance.

Drew Peterson is being held at the Will County Jail on $20 million bond.

Stebic, a mother of two, was last seen in Plainfield in April 2007. Authorities have named Stebic's husband Craig a "person of interest" in her disappearance but he is not charged with any crime. He has denied any involvement.

Remains Found Near Homes of Missing Women

(CNN) -- An autopsy was being conducted Thursday on remains found on the bank of a river less than 30 miles from the homes of two missing Illinois women.

The "partial skeletal remains" were found on the south bank of the Des Plaines River near Channahon, Illinois, said a recording on the Will County, Illinois, coroner's media line. They were found by a marine cleanup crew, the recording said. Authorities have not said whether the remains were thought to be those of a male or female.

Illinois State Police were on the scene Thursday conducting additional searches, spokesman Sgt. Tom Burek said.

Channahon is 20 miles from Bolingbrook, Illinois, where Stacy Peterson lived with her husband, former police officer Drew Peterson.

Stacy Peterson disappeared in October 2007. Her husband has been named a suspect in her disappearance, but he has maintained his innocence, saying she left him for another man.

Stacy Peterson, 23 when she was last seen, was Drew Peterson's fourth wife. This month, Drew Peterson, 55, was indicted on murder charges in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, while the two were in the midst of a nasty divorce. He has pleaded not guilty.

Savio's death was originally deemed an accident, but authorities took a second look at the case after Stacy Peterson's disappearance.

Channahon is also 15 miles from Plainfield, Illinois, where Lisa Stebic was last seen in April 2007.

On the day she went missing, she petitioned a court to have her husband, Craig, evicted from their Plainfield home. Craig Stebic told police he was working in the backyard when his 37-year-old wife left home about 6 p.m., taking her cell phone and purse.

Authorities have said they believe that Lisa Stebic was the victim of foul play and have named Craig Stebic a suspect.

Lisa Stebic Tried To Evict Husband, Vanished

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Two years ago this month, Lisa Stebic disappeared in the middle of a contentious marital separation, leaving two children behind.

There was little doubt of the growing trouble in Lisa and Craig Stebic's marriage according to friends, family and court documents. They weren't speaking, but were living under the same roof.

On the day Lisa Stebic went missing, April 30, 2007, she petitioned the court to have her husband evicted from their home in Plainfield, Illinois.

As the second anniversary of Stebic's disappearance approaches, police consider her husband the prime suspect, but are far from solving the case. Craig Stebic has said he's innocent of wrongdoing.

Craig Stebic told police he was working in the back yard when Lisa left their home at 6 p.m., taking only her cell phone and purse.

Lisa Stebic frequently went jogging at a nearby track at that time in the evening, however no one saw her at the track on April 30.

"We weren't able to triangulate her cell phone to locate her when she went missing," said Chief Donald E. Bennett of the Plainfield Police Department.

"Her husband was very controlling and restrictive," said Bennett. "He only allowed her to have a pre-paid cell phone with a small number of minutes per month."

For weeks afterward police and search teams scoured the area, hoping to find the missing 37-year-old.

FBI and divers searched bodies of water near the Stebics' home, but found nothing.

Police executed a search warrant at the Stebic home in mid-May 2007 which included examination of the family computer and two vehicles. Investigators are not releasing results of the forensic evidence gathered.

But police said they found more than 15 guns at the home, all registered to Craig Stebic. While some were clearly hunting guns, others were not.

Police characterize Stebic as being uncooperative with investigators. He also refused to take a polygraph test, they said.

After checking tips that came to light in recent months, police were able to rule out other persons of interest. They have narrowed the pool of suspects to just one: Craig Stebic.

"I don't understand why the police have named my client a suspect. He has told police everything he knows about the day his wife disappeared," said his attorney, Dion Davi.

Investigators have said they believe Lisa Stebic was the victim of foul play. Her family and friends insist she would never go off on her own and leave her children.

The afternoon Stebic vanished she was at home with her husband and children. But Craig Stebic sent the children to a neighborhood candy store that afternoon. When they returned, their mother was gone.

Not long after Lisa Stebic disappeared, her estranged husband filed for sole custody of their children. The request was denied by the court.

Police also continue to search a large estate near the Michigan-Wisconsin border belonging to Craig Stebic's family. The estate is a six-hour drive from the Stebics' home in Plainfield, but the area is dotted with abandoned mines that could easily conceal a body.

"Our search up in that area didn't even begin to scratch the surface," Chief Bennett said.

Lisa Stebic's family and the Plainfield Police Department ask anyone with information on the whereabouts of Lisa Stebic to please call their tip line at 815-267-7217.

They are offering a $75,000 reward.

Lisa Stebic is described as 5'2" tall and 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
