Stranger Allegedly Slaps Crying Child in Store

(CNN) -- A Georgia man allegedly slapped a toddler at a Walmart store because she wouldn't stop crying, authorities said.

Roger Stephens, 61, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree cruelty to children. An incident report obtained from police in Gwinnett County indicated Stephens did not know the 2-year-old girl he stands accused of hitting.

The confrontation happened shortly before noon at the Walmart in Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta.

According to the arresting officer, the child's mother said her daughter was crying as they walked down one of the aisles.

The mother said a stranger later identified as Stephens approached them and said, "If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you."

A few moments later, while the mother and the crying child were in another aisle, Stephens allegedly grabbed the girl and slapped her across the face.

Police said he hit her four or five times. "See, I told you I would shut her up," the suspect allegedly told the mother.

Authorities described "slight redness" to the toddler's face. Before he was arrested, Stephens apologized to the mother for striking the girl, the incident report said.

Stephens, a Stone Mountain resident, is being held by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department.

Haylee Donathan Wal-Mart Surveillance Video

NEW INFORMATION--Police have discovered a surveillance tape they say may offer clues in the case of missing 4-year-old Haylee Donathan.

Haylee disappeared while on a camping trip with her mother Candace Watson and her boyfriend Robbi Potter, a convicted sex offender.

Video from a Walmart in Marion apparently shows Haylee's mother aays after the little girl was last seen by family members.

The video goes on to show a man believed to be Potter in a truck outside with a little girl.

"It's just so hard for me to believe that she would leave her in the truck. I just don't understand it," said Mary Watson, Haylee's grandmother.

The hope is that the video paired with a $10,000 reward will bring Haylee home.

'In 4 Seconds Someone Died And I Got Shot,' Survivor Says

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- A man who was shot with the same bullet that killed an armored car guard described the scene at a Wal-Mart where the shooting and robbery took place.

Wilbert Pina was in the store Tuesday with his 15-month-old son waiting to cash a check when he heard a bang and felt a bullet tearing into his shoulder.

The impact of the gunshot knocked Pina forward over the shopping cart where his son sat.

"I was just thinking of my son and my wife and my family and wondering if I was going to see them again," said Pina. "In four seconds someone died and I got shot," Pina told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Richard Thompson.

Shot in the back of his shoulder, Pina turned to see a man dying on the floor and another man waving a gun. Pina showed Thompson how he tried to protect his son Emmet.

"I saw the gun waving and I picked him up out of the chair and held him against my body," said Pina.

Pina said in that moment, he believed he might die but had to save his son.

"Assuming the worst -- if he shoots us I'm going to be shot. I don’t' care. At least I'll fall on my son and he'll be OK," Pina told Thompson.

The gunman fled with a bag of cash leaving armored car guard Kurt Husted dead of a gunshot wound to the head and Pina with the same bullet lodged inside his shoulder as he held his son tightly.

"I started crying because this guy could have killed me and my son with one single bullet," he said.

Pina said doctors were unable to remove the bullet from his shoulder.

Though in pain, Pina said he is grateful he and his son survived.

Woman Charged After Baby, Car Seat Thrown

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police have charged a Memphis woman who they say used a child car seat with a 2-month-old infant inside to strike a Wal-Mart store employee.

Detective Monique Martin said in a release Monday that Camilla Fields was charged with one felony count of child abuse and neglect and one count of assault.

A police report from the May 20 incident said Fields was carrying the car seat when she was confronted by a loss prevention officer about shoplifting from the store.

Police said Fields threw the seat and ran away and the baby landed face down on the pavement. An emergency medical technician performed treatment until the baby regained consciousness.

The child's mother, Stacey Cleaves, was also charged with false reporting and child neglect.
