Raped At 8 And Left For Dead, A Victim Raises Her Voice

(CNN) -- For nearly 20 years Jennifer Schuett has held onto every memory of the night she was abducted from her bedroom, raped and left for dead.

It was August 10, 1990. Schuett was 8 years old and lived alone with her mother in the first floor of an apartment complex in Dickinson, Texas. The bedroom windows faced the parking lot.

Investigators were never able to identify a suspect, but new DNA testing may change that.

CNN normally does not identify victims of sexual assaults. But Schuett wants to go public with her story-- and her name-- to increase the chances of finding and prosecuting her attacker.

"It's not about me anymore," she explained. "It's about all the little girls that go to sleep at night. I know there are so many girls out there who have been raped and hurt. You have to fight back."

For that, Schuett, 27, is relying on her voice, her memory and advances in DNA testing.

"I remember everything; I've always wanted to remember everything, so I can find the person that did this," Schuett told CNN during a phone interview. "If I had blocked this out of my memory, the investigation wouldn't have come this far. I'm a fighter."

Schuett says she was alone in her bed when a man came creeping in through the window. She remembers waking up in a stranger's arms as he carried her across a dark parking lot.

"When I opened my eyes, his face was the first thing I saw and he covered my face and mouth," she said. "He ran with me to his car. He told me he was an undercover cop and that he knew my family. He seemed calm -- not nervous, not aggressive."

After they left the parking lot, he drove her through the streets of Dickinson, Texas, pulling into a mechanic shop next to her elementary school.

"Watch the moon. The moon will change colors and that is when your mom will come to get you," she recalled him saying. "Oh, it looks like she is not coming."

Schuett said he drove her to an overgrown field next to the school and raped her.

"He had a knife to my throat and touched my face and offered me Reese's pieces," she said. "I was scared but I knew I couldn't be fast enough to get away. Cars would drive by but I couldn't get away to get help."

She believes she passed out. "I woke up to him dragging me by my ankles," she said. "I felt thorns ripping the skin off my back. I would see him turn to look at me and I would play dead."

She passed out again, and awoke at daybreak. "I remember feeling dew around me and I couldn't figure out why when I screamed I couldn't hear myself," said Schuett.

She lay naked on top on an ant hill with her throat slashed from ear to ear, and her voice box torn.

Much later, she said, "I heard children playing hide and seek. That is when one of the kids tripped over my foot," said Schuett.

She was found at 6 p.m. on a hot August day. She had been lying in the field for nearly 12 hours. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

"Three days after the attack, I started giving a description. The doctors told me I would never be able to talk again, but I proved them all wrong," said Schuett. She believes she got her voice back so she could tell her story.

"I never wanted to play the victim role. I wanted to be a strong survivor," she said.

But the attack left its mark. "For the first two years, I had nightmares and was scared," she said. "But I never wanted sympathy. ... If I had given up, he would have won, and I wanted to show him: 'You didn't win.' "

Shuettt said she is now "on a manhunt."

Houston FBI Special Agent Richard Rennison is one of the lead investigators in the case, along with Dickinson police Detective Tim Cromie.

Both men were discussing the case, when Rinacin received a memo from the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment (CARD) Team, saying they were looking for cold child abduction cases that could be retested for DNA evidence. The Schuett case was one of the cases selected.

Rinacin, who has 10 years of experience in child abduction cases, said he has never seen a case like Schuett's.

"This is the only one that I can think of that the victim has suffered some traumatic injuries and survived," he said, "The main reason the CARD team picked this case was because she was alive. In cases of child abduction it is rare that the child is recovered alive. Frequently you recover a body and most times you never find them." Schuett is a living witness who can help put the pieces together.

The investigators found evidence collected 19 years ago, which can be retested. It includes the underwear and pajamas Schuett was wearing, as well as a man's underwear and T-shirt, which were found in the field where Schuett was left for dead.

The clothes were tested in 1990, but the sample wasn't large enough for conclusive results. But now, modern techniques allow DNA to be isolated from a single human cell.

Once they get back the DNA results -- "any time now," Schuett said -- they will run them through the FBI's criminal database and see if they get a match.

The FBI has also offered a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to a break in the case. And last weekend Schuett appeared in "America's Most Wanted," which resulted in several leads from viewers who called in with information.

"Someone might remember something about that night," Schuett said. "Dickinson is a really small community. Everybody knows everybody. I know someone in town knows something."

Stillwater Teen Found Alive With Throat Slashed

STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Stillwater police are searching for two suspects after a man was found staggering out of the woods with his throat slashed.

A fisherman found the 19-year-old Jason Wells Thursday morning at Lake McCurtry northwest of Stillwater.

Stillwater Police said the teen had been stabbed multiple times near a gravel campsite and someone cut his throat with a pocket knife.

"It was a pretty gruesome scene," Dickerson said. "Due to the nature of his injuries, we did not have any verbal communication with him at all."

Stillwater said they believe whoever is responsible for the attack had intended to kill Wells.

"Young man is probably lucky to be alive. We're hoping he pulls out of this," Dickerson said.

Court documents show Wells was arrested for marijuana possession two years ago. However, a friend of Wells said she has no idea who would want to hurt him and believe he was turning his life around. Wells also has a 1-year-old daughter.

Wells is listed in critical condition at OU Medical Center.

Police are now looking for two Hispanic males who were last seen driving a 2001 or 2002 gold GMC pickup. One man appeared to be in his mid 20s.

Anyone with information is asked to call Stillwater police at 405-742-8327.

Teenage Sisters Found With Throats Slashed in NoHo

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- Police are investigating the murders of 2 sister found in North Hollywood home with their throats slashed.

A third woman in her 40s was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with knife wounds.

Police say she is now considered a person of interest in the gruesome killings.

Relatives at the scene told KTLA that the girls were 14 and 17, and that the woman in the hospital is their mother.

Los Angeles police Capt. Ivan Minsal says officers found the bodies after responding to a 911 call Wednesday morning.

One of the victims was found in the main house and the other victim and the injured woman were found in a converted garage, he said.

It's believed all three lived in the converted garage with their grandmother.

She wasn't home at the time of the deadly attacks.

Detectives say they don't think the man who rents out the main house was home either.

The woman in her 40s owned the property, according to relatives. She was going through some tough financial times, so she was renting the main house out.

The names of the victim are not being released.

Father Accused of Killing 6-Year-Old Daughter

MANSFIELD, Mass. -- A Mansfield man sobbed and looked at the floor as he pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he killed his 6-year-old daughter.

Kristopher Griffin was arraigned in Taunton District Court on a charge of murder hours after police responding to his Chilson Avenue home found Kaitlynn Griffin dead in the basement.

Police say the 35-year-old Griffin slit the throat of his daughter.

Prosecutors allege Griffin confessed to killing her and said that God had told him to do it. Police officers who arrested the suspect found him covered in blood and walking barefoot not far from the girl's home.

An officer asked Griffin if he had hurt anyone "and the defendant responded, saying 'yes, she's gone. I had to save her, I killed my little girl," prosecutor Cynthia Brackett told the court.

Police say Griffin had a backpack on at the time of his arrest and the bag had a knife.

Griffin had left a note in a mobile home where he had been staying after breaking up with the victim's mother, saying "forgiveness for sending Katy to heaven," police said.

The suspect has a history of mental illness and recently broke up with the girl's mother, who was planning to leave the state with her.

A judge ordered Griffin held without bail and undergo psychological evaluation.

The Bristol District Attorney's office did not immediately return calls seeking additional information. It was not immediately clear whether Griffin has legal representation.

Half Brother Admits Slitting 4-Year-Old Sister's Throat

Chicago Sun-Times: Four-year-old Sabrina Clement had to die, her 18-year-old half brother told police, because he couldn't get a gun to kill the person he believed was abusing the little girl, according to court documents filed recently.

"It was me," Keith Randulich told police in a soft voice when they showed up to the family's Mokena home on May 22 and found him covered in blood, according to a search warrant affidavit Mokena police filed on June 9.

Randulich also told police later that night that he wanted to kill a person he thought had been molesting Sabrina for two years.

He got a firearm owners I.D. card and asked his mother on May 22 to buy him a gun, according to the affidavit.

When she refused, she and her son argued, so she left her 16-year-old in charge of the little girl while she and her husband went to her 14-year-old son's school, it continued.

Randulich said that person was too big to kill without a gun, according to the affidavit.

So while his 16-year-old brother was upstairs playing a wrestling video game, Randulich decided to slit his sister's neck because he thought "it would be quick."

He called 911, saying he "murdered his sister with a knife."

Aside from physical evidence taken from the home, police also recovered video games, a bunch of heavy metal CDs, clown masks and a book titled "Children At Risk: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Children."

Randulich is awaiting trial in the Will County Adult Detention Facility in lieu of $10 million bail. His attorney could not be reached Wednesday for comment.

His case returns to court on Monday.

Ex-Wife, Mother at Confessed Triple Murderer's First Court Appearance

CANTON, Ohio - The man who has confessed to killing his two young children and his ex-mother-in-law out of spite for his ex-wife appeared in court for the first time since the alleged murders, Fox 8's Kristy Steeves reports.

James Mammone III could be seen behind a glass partition inside a room connected to the courtroom, where his ex-wife and his mother sat two seats from each other.

The judge set June 16 as the date for a preliminary hearing. It is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.

The defendant's mother, visably shaken, sat among the first row of onlookers. For the duration of the proceedings, she held two photographs of her now-deceased grandchildren.

The defendant's ex-wife, Marcia Mammone, sat nearby. At one point, a bailiff noticed that she was crying and got her a box of Kleenex.

Both the ex-wife and the mother were escprted out a back door of the courthouse, away from cameras.

On Tuesday, James Mammone III told authorities in Canton that he killed his children and ex-mother-in-law with the intention of inflicting pain on his ex-wife.

Police tell Fox 8's Kathleen Cochrane that Mammone first killed his ex-mother-in-law at her home and then tried to break into his ex-wife's home. She called 911 early Monday morning.

From inside the house, Marcia Mammone told the 911 dispatcher that she could see her two children -- 5-year-old Macy and 3-year-old James -- in the suspect's car parked in the driveway. The two children were later found murdered, with throats slit, in the custody of their father.

James III and Marcia divorced in April and records show that he had threatened to kill her in the past. He even spent a night in jail on domestic violence charges while he and Marcia were still married.

On Monday, he seemed determined to get into Marcia's home as she begged for the authorities to respond.

James III remains locked up in prison on $15 million bond.

A spokesperson for the family says that they are grieving deeply and asking for privacy during this extremely difficult time.

Father Charged with Murdering 2 Children & Mother-in-Law in Canton

CANTON, OH -A murderous rampage in Canton that would leave two children and their grandmother dead, began early Monday morning, when 35-year-old James Mammone III tried to break into the home of his ex-wife.

The couple's divorce was finalized in April. Court records indicate James Mammone was convicted in 2008 of domestic violence after threatening to kill his wife. But on Monday morning, he did not find her. A neighbor, who did not want to be identified says "I saw all the glass and the door was propped open, and he attempted to get into the second door."

Investigators say James Mammone left the home of his ex-wife and traveled a short distance to his ex mother-in-law's house. It was at the home of 57-year-old Margaret Eakin where Mammone would pick up and drop off his five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, as part of his visitation rights.

Canton Police say James Mammone broke into the home Monday morning and shot and killed Margaret Eakin. Ed Roth, a neighbor, says "I called 911 because I knew, I know gunshots, I know someone's screaming."

Roth says he saw James Mammone's car pull out of the driveway, so he decided check on Margaret Eakin. But once inside her home, Roth's wife alerted him that Mammone has returned, so Roth quickly ran back to his home.

Mammone was gone by the time Canton police arrived to investigate the shooting death of Margaret Eakin. They learned that her grandchildren, five-year-old Macy Mammone and three-year-old James Mammone, Junior were missing and were likely with their father.

When police caught up with James Mammone in his car outside his apartment, they were horrified. Canton Police Chief Dean McKimm says "the two children were found unfortunately deceased in the back seat of the vehicle, apparent victims of knife wounds." The Stark County Coroner says the throats of the two children had been slit.

Those who knew them are heart broken. A neighbor says "very, very sweet, Macy, the little girl was quiet she always had a smile on her face. Just Saturday, she had a blow-up thing out there and they were out there playing in the yard having a good time, James was all proud of his chalk and was showing me his chalk, and I'd have never thought, I would never have thought, this is just such a shock."

James Mammone now faces three counts of aggravated murder for allegedly taking the lives of his two children and his former mother-in-law. Ed Roth says "it's just so senseless, it's just so, you know people are so selfish, so you know, it's just seems like it was all about him, how many lives he's going to touch now, it's just stupid."
