NEW ORLEANS – A child accidentally shot and killed a 20-year-old man who was trying to pry the gun away from him in New Orleans East, said police spokeswoman Sabrina Richardson.
The shooting happened in the 8000 block of Brevard Avenue around 6 p.m. Monday.
While the 20 year old tried to get the gun away from the child, at some point the gun discharged, Richardson said. The man was hit by a bullet, killing him. The man died on the scene.
Richardson said police aren't sure at what point exactly the gun went off. She said the child was playing with the gun.
Richardson said two other people, whom police are questioning, were in the house at the time. There were no other children in the house at the time.
Richardson said that police haven't confirmed who owned the gun. She said they also haven't confirmed the relationship between the child and the victim.
"Right now, this does appear to be an accidental shooting," Richardson said.
