MENALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Police in Fayette County said a mother of six who was fatally struck by a car was run over by her husband.
A makeshift memorial with flowers along Route 40 marks the spot where Carmen Higinbotham was struck and killed.
Higinbotham, 30, of Brownsville, was pronounced dead at the scene near Searights Crossroads in Menallen Township at about 1 a.m. Sunday, according to the county coroner's office.
WTAE Channel 4's Jennifer Miele has confirmed that state police are charging Higinbotham's husband, Ronald, with criminal homicide.
Police and District Attorney Nancy Vernon discussed the case at the state police barracks in Uniontown on Wednesday.
Describing the death as "violent," the Fayette County coroner said that Carmen Higinbotham was struck by the car and then run over.
Investigators believe there was a history of domestic violence between the couple and that Carmen Higinbotham may have been considering leaving her husband.
Police are also looking for two possible witnesses -- two women who saw the body by the side of the road and flagged down a security guard at a nearby bar for help.
Police had considered the case to be a hit-and-run until they got a phone call from Ronald Higinbotham telling them that he believed he had killed his wife, Miele reported.
She had recently reunited with her out-of-state birth parents, Miele reported.
Higinbotham had two children with her husband, two stepchildren and two adopted children.
