Smoldering Package in Greenwich Prompts Police to Send in Johnny Number 5

Greenwich Time- Bomb squad probes "smoldering package"

A suspicious package stumbled upon by a passing police officer in downtown Greenwich caused alarm Thursday afternoon, resulting in the Stamford bomb squad coming down to investigate.

After less than an hour, however, authorities determined the package was nothing more than a "smoldering seat cushion."

The incident was reported just after 2:30 p.m., next to 20 E. Elm St.

Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the department, said the bomb squad sent a robot to examine the item and take video footage, which police reviewed.

"A highly vigilant officer was on patrol and observed this package," Gray said. "He approached it and deemed it suspicious enough to follow the normal protocols."

During the investigation, parts of East Elm Street were cordoned off, but no businesses were evacuated.

As the robot touched the seat, Gray said it ignited further, but then the flames subsided on their own. Technicians determined that the item was not explosive.

The area was reopened just after 3 p.m.

While the incident did not result in any injuries, Gray said police felt it was better to be safe than sorry.
"Each suspicious package we treat as a potential (hazard)," Gray said.
