GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. -- A 9-year-old quadriplegic girl was found dead in a storage facility near Flint on Wednesday.

Flint police said in a statement their investigation of Shylea Thomas' disappearance led them to the facility in nearby Vienna Township.

Her body was found Wednesday morning wrapped in a garbage bag inside a large plastic container at the Stor & Lock storage facility on North Saginaw Road.

Police told TV5 they believe her body may have been stored in the rented unit for up to six weeks.

The girl’s adoptive mother, 39-year-old Lorrie Mae Thomas, was jailed overnight on family abuse causing death. She has not been formally charged.
The adoptive mother, who was origionally the girl's aunt, could face a wide array of charges if she is arraigned in the child’s death.

“At the very least, it’s neglect,” said David Leyton, Genesee County prosecutor. “At the most, it’s murder. But we’re going to wait for the forensic pathologist to tell us the cause of death, which hopefully we’ll know later today.”
Officers were called Tuesday by state Department of Human Services workers to a home on East Pierson Road in Flint about the missing girl.

Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton said police noticed the victim’s wheelchair in the home and become suspicious when Thomas told police her daughter was out of town on a visit.
An autopsy was planned to determine a cause of death.
Thomas' other seven children were placed in protective services, according to police.
