City Woman Miscarried Fetus Found in Water Treatment Plant

STAMFORD -- A 22-year-old women told police she accidently flushed the miscarried fetus that ended up at a city waste treatment plant this past weekend.

Stamford police Sgt. Anthony Lupinacci said the woman did not know she was pregnant and miscarried on a toilet and flushed out of nervousness. She went to the hospital for treatment shortly after the miscarriage.

Lupinacci said police will conduct DNA testing to confirm whether the woman miscarried the four-inch fetus, which was proven not to be viable because it was 14- to 15-weeks old.

The woman's account was feasible and police are not considering criminal charges in the incident, Lupinacci said.

"She was just in pain and nervous and didn't know what to do," Lupinacci said.

Workers at the wastewater treatment facility on Harbor View Avenue discovered the stillborn fetus while sifting through sewage Saturday morning.

It was discovered by a worker while he was checking a large trash container that sewage is deposited into for foreign items. Police took the fetus to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy was conducted.
